BEM VINDO!

Here is something that was posted by Many Players on the French forum this morning, in response to some of the concerns expressed over the differences between the weather forecasts available through ugrib, Zygrib (and others) and those made available to MP by their own supplier.

The introduction is in French, but the response made by the supplier/NOAA is in English.
Here is a translation of the French part:

"Hello,
We are aware of the problems that our current weather forecasting system is causing you, and we have litterally
"harassed" our supplier - requesting that they double- and triple-check their modelling.

They reviewed their calculations and assured us of their accuracy. Their explanation as to the differences between your files (ugrib, zygrib, ...etc) and theirs remains the same: the NOAA has implemented a new generation algorythm, with a change in some of the physics parameters (which is what we are using).

But our supplier insists that these differences will indeed disappear because the NOAA will switch over to the new generation model on July 27 (you - the players - currently get the old models and we - MP - the new).

July 27 will therefore hold the answer.

In order to prove their good faith, our supplier forwarded the mail they received from the NOAA, which reads as follows:
"AMENDED DATE: GLOBAL FORECAST SYSTEM CHANGES:
POSTPONED TO JULY 27 2010.

REFER TO: TECHNICAL IMPLEMENTATION NOTICE /TIN/ 10-15 TRANSMITTED APRIL 2 2010.

AMENDED TO:
-CHANGE EFFECTIVE DATE TO JULY 27
-INDICATE THAT PARALLEL DATA IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE ON THE NCEP SERVER -ADD STATEMENT ABOUT A FILENAME CHANGE ON THE NCEP SERVER.

EFFECTIVE JULY 27 2010...BEGINNING WITH THE 1200 COORDINATED UNIVERSAL TIME /UTC/ RUN...THE NATIONAL CENTERS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PREDICTION /NCEP/ WILL UPGRADE THE GLOBAL FORECAST SYSTEM /GFS/. THE RESOLUTION OF THE GLOBAL FORECAST MODEL WILL BE INCREASED FROM T382 /35 KM/ TO T574 /27 KM/. THE HIGH RESOLUTION PORTION OF THE FORECAST WILL BE EXTENDED FROM 180 HRS TO 192 HRS. WITH THIS EXTENSION 3 HOURLY OUTPUT WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE OUT TO 192 HOURS.

THIS WILL RESULT IN SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN THE DEFINITION OF PARAMETERS IN THE 192 HOUR PRESSURE GRIB /PGRB/ AND FLUX FILES.
THERE WILL ALSO BE SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN MODEL PHYSICS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS CHANGE. IN ADDITION MODIFICATIONS WILL BE MADE TO THE CONTENTS OF THE GLOBAL DATA ASSIMILATION SYSTEM /GDAS/ AND GFS PGRB FILES.

CHANGES IN MODEL PHYSICS INCLUDE:

RADIATION AND CLOUD OVERLAP
GRAVITY WAVE DRAG
HURRICANE RELOCATION
NEW PLANETARY BOUNDARY LAYER SCHEME
NEW MASS FLUX SHALLOW CONVECTION
UPDATED DEEP CONVECTION SCHEME
POSITIVE DEFINITE TRACER TRANSPORT SCHEME"
